Cannabidiol (CBD): a naturally occurring plant compound found in the flower of cannabis, a plant with a rich history as a medicine going back thousands of years.
Anandamide: a endocannabinoid which acts as a neurotransmitter produced in the brain that binds to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). It’s been called the “bliss molecule,” aptly named after Ananda, the Sanskrit word for “joy, bliss, or happiness.”
2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG): the other main endocannabinoid, that along with anandamide, has an effect on the CB receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system. Specifically, 2- AG is a full agonist of both CB receptors, and is the primary ligand (binding molecule) for the CB2 receptor.
Serotonin: most commonly believed to be a neurotransmitter, although some consider it to be a hormone. It is produced in the intestines and the brain and believed to influence a variety of body and psychological functions.
5-HT1A receptor: a subtype of serotonin receptor located in the brain. Activation of this receptor has been involved in the mechanism of action of anxiolytic, antidepressant and antipsychotic medications.
Endocannabinoid system (ECS): a biological system composed of endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) that are involved in regulating a variety of physiological and cognitive processes.
Link Between CBD and Anxiety
Stress-related Mood and Anxiety
Endocannabinoids (endogenous cannabinoids) play a key role in our Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is present throughout the human body, and it helps to regulate crucial aspects of our health, such as our immune and central nervous systems (CNS).
Endocannabinoids are lipids that act as a neurotransmitter. Mainly, they affect the CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the entire body. CB1 can also be specifically found in several brain areas, including the neocortex, the hippocampus, the amygdala, the cerebellum and the hypothalamus. These brain areas are involved in emotional and behavioral reactions, homeostasis, learning, memory and decisions.
Numerous studies have shown the role of endocannabinoid brain receptors and singled out the CB1 receptor as playing a key role in anxiety. Similar studies have located CB1 receptors in the brain’s amygdala and found that if this receptor is blocked or the gene that encodes it is deleted, anxiety can increase.
Stress and anxiety affects millions of people of all ages throughout the United States.
More than 70 million U.S. adults (or 18% of the nation’s population) live with anxiety, including numerous other anxiety-related disorders and associated conditions.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAO) affects almost 7 million adults, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states CBD
has been shown to reduce stress in animals. Another study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it states “CBD has a broad pharmacological profile, including interactions with several receptors known to regulate fear and anxiety- related behaviors, specifically the cannabinoid (CB1R) receptor, the 5-HT1A receptor, and the transient potential (TRP) (TRPV1) receptors.”
Increased 2-AG as a response to Stress
Research has demonstrated that the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2- AG) plays a critical role in regulating emotional behavior. CBD is known to augment the supply of 2-AG which may increase stress resilience. CBD is also known to affect levels of brain serotonin and the serotonin-1A (5-HT1A) receptor which is thought to play a role in regulating and modulating anxiety.
